Mola Art

Discussion:

At first glance the art style appeared to me to be of African descent. Mola art is created by layering  anything such as paper or fabric to create shapes. The process in which this art is created is such a new concept to me. I went through 3 different practice pieces before I got something I felt was adequate. Working backwards is still something I'm getting used to.

Origin:

Originated from the Kuna women of Panama, originally used for decorating the body.

Characteristics:

Vibrant colors, biomorphic shapes

Function:

Originally used to create a cultural identity, now a way to renew old clothing and sell it to tourists.

Rita Smith:

Rita Smith is an artist who brought Mola art and the Kuna people to the attention of the rest of the world
